The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, launched the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana on 29th February, 2024 to increase the share of solar rooftop capacity and empower residential households to generate their own electricity.
The scheme has an outlay of Rs 75,021 crore and is to be implemented till FY 2026-27. The scheme will support the installation of grid-connected rooftop solar projects in the residential sector through Central Financial Support (CFA) from the Central Government.
This initiative aims to provide free electricity up to 300 units every month to one crore households across India, enabling them to reduce their electricity bills significantly while contributing to environmental sustainability.
The scheme also focuses on developing the entire ecosystem for rooftop solar, including supply chain, installation, and maintenance services.
Achieve 1 crore rooftop solar system (RTS) installation in residential sector.
Provide free electricity to 1 crore households up to 300 units per month.
Produce 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity reducing 720 million ton of CO2 emissions.
Develop enabling ecosystem including regulatory support and supply chain.
Boost local economy and employment along with enhanced energy security.
Aid in achieving India's NDC commitments at UNFCCC by installing 30 GW of solar capacity.
| S. No | Type of Residential Segment | CFA (Subsidy) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Residential Sector (first 2 kWp of RTS capacity or part thereof) | Rs 30,000/kWp |
| 2 | Residential Sector (with additional RTS capacity of 1 kWp or part thereof) | Rs 18,000/kWp |
| 3 | Residential Sector (additional RTS capacity beyond 3 kWp) | No additional CFA |
| 4 | Group Housing Societies/ Residential Welfare Associations (GHS/RWA) etc, for common facilities including EV charging up to 500 kWp (@3 kWp per house) | Rs 18,000/kWp |
Subsidy: ₹30,000 × 1.5 = ₹45,000
Subsidy: ₹30,000×2 + ₹18,000×0.5 = ₹69,000
Subsidy: ₹30,000×2 + ₹18,000×1 = ₹78,000
100 kW capacity with 50 houses: ₹18,000×100 kW = ₹18,00,000
